I Sat on the Doctor Who Rock
In which I park my butt in the same place that Matt Smith did, and other life updates.
Hey friends! Welcome back to the Loose Leaf List. It’s been a bit of an interesting month — I got too busy with other things to finish reading any books, but those other things were pretty cool. Namely …
My Pilgrimage to the Doctor Who Rock
At the start of July, I spent a couple of days in New York City, and it was very exciting going to the Met and various other famous landmarks. However, the highlight of the trip was in Central Park, where I found the Very Same Rock that the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, and Rory Williams sat on in Doctor Who Season 7, Episode 5, The Angels Take Manhattan!
(You know, the episode where Amy and Rory leave and it’s all sad and stuff)

Okay, so they actually sit on two different rocks and cut between them to make it look like the same rock. The picture here is me sitting on the bigger rock. I’m pretty sure I also found the smaller rock, but it’s more overgrown than it was when they filmed the show 12 years ago, and I didn’t get a picture of myself sitting on that one.

In case you ever find yourself in Central Park and also want to try finding the Doctor Who Rocks, the coordinates for the large rock are 40.7683441, -73.9734890. If you feel like trying your luck with the smaller rock, the coordinates for that are at 40.7675866, -73.9738186.
Distracting Myself from the Doom Spiral
In writing news, my fantasy novel is currently out in the stormy seas of querying literary agents, and quite frankly nothing good can come from me thinking too hard about that. So I decided to dive into some new projects to distract myself!
One of those new projects is a space thriller that I’m having a lot of fun with so far. The combination of a tricky premise and unconventional structure may have me girlbossing too close to the sun, but hey, it’s worth a shot!
I’ve also been dabbling in some short fiction, which is a very different form to novels. It’s been fun learning what makes a good short piece, even if it feels a bit like starting from scratch.

In Case You Missed It …
In which I round up my favorite fun posts that I made in July!
You may remember from last month’s newsletter that I’m a YouTuber now! This month’s YouTube video was my full review of the latest Doctor Who season, including spoiler-free and spoilery sections, plenty of character and story analysis, and something of a conspiracy theory I had about the episode order for the season. I had a lot of fun making this video, and have been loving the discussions in the comment section!
But that wasn’t my only content wrapping up the latest Doctor Who season. Having let my feelings marinate a bit, I felt like enough time had passed to properly rank each of the episodes, and I shared my ranking on TikTok:
@looseleafellie Time for my Doctor Who episode ranking! If you prefer to read my ranking in one place, here it is in text form: 9. Space Babies 8. The Leg... See more
Then, on Instagram and TikTok, I posted a video exploring a few of the ways that the English language used to be different in the past:
On Instagram and TikTok, I discussed fictional constructed languages, known as conlangs, and listed five conlangs from famous fantasy and science fiction media that you can actually learn for yourself:
On TikTok, I shared some of my unpopular Doctor Who opinions and got yelled at a lot in the comments:
@looseleafellie Preparing to be yelled at for some of these 😅 #DoctorWho #WhoTok #DavidTennant
And finally, on Instagram and TikTok, I shared the history of some words that used to mean the opposite of what they mean today:
Thank you so much for reading! Until next time, bookish friends.
Love,
Ellie
